There’s something special about arriving at your vacation home. The pace slows. The schedule clears. You settle into a version of yourself that doesn’t always have room to exist in everyday life.

That’s why I believe a vacation home deserves just as much thought put into the interior as a primary residence. Too often, second homes become an afterthought. They’re furnished with leftover pieces, quick online purchases, or themed decor that feels more like a vacation rental than a home.

But your Napa vacation home has the potential to become something much more meaningful: a place that reflects not only where you are, but how you want to feel while you’re there.

Your Vacation Home Is an Opportunity to Design for a Different Version of You

Our primary homes are designed around the realities of everyday life and all the practical considerations that come with raising families and managing busy lives. A vacation home serves a different purpose.

Maybe vacation is when you feel most relaxed and crave quiet, minimal surroundings. Or perhaps it’s when you feel inspired to embrace richer colors, layered textures, or a style you’ve always admired but never felt was quite right for your primary residence.

This is your opportunity to lean into that.

I often encourage clients to think about who they become when they’re in Napa. What pace are they living at? What experiences are they seeking? How do they want mornings to feel? Evenings? Entertaining friends? Those answers become the foundation for the design.

Sometimes the vacation version of you is bolder. Sometimes it’s simpler. Neither is right or wrong. It simply needs to reflect the life you’re hoping to experience while you’re there.

A Vacation Home Can Give the Other Partner's Style a Place to Shine

It’s not uncommon for couples to have very different design preferences. Over time, a primary residence often ends up reflecting one partner’s style more than the other’s. Sometimes because that’s what felt right for the home itself, and sometimes it’s simply because that’s how the decisions unfolded.

A second home creates a fresh starting point.

It allows couples to introduce a new design vocabulary that may better reflect one or both personalities. Rather than compromising the style of one home, you have an opportunity to celebrate another side of who you are together.

A Nod to Napa Goes Further Than a Theme

One mistake I occasionally see is leaning too heavily into the location. Just because your home is in Napa doesn’t mean every room needs vineyards on the walls or wine-inspired decor.

The goal isn’t to create a theme. It’s to capture a feeling.

Instead of obvious references, I prefer incorporating thoughtful elements that naturally reflect Wine Country living. Modern Mediterranean details like terracotta floors, colorful or mosaic tiles, create a sense of Wine Country without feeling overly literal. Really leaning more into the modern aesthetic keeps the design from going thematic.

Beautiful Vacation Homes Aren't Furnished Overnight

There’s no right or wrong time to refurnish your vacation home. Do it at the time that works best for your family, but remember to have realistic expectations. Lead times are long in this industry. Even if it’s just a furnishing project, don’t expect it to be instant.

You want to leave time to create a beautiful project, so it’s wise to begin planning six months or more in advance. That timeline allows us to thoughtfully design the space, source pieces that truly belong there, and avoid settling for whatever stock items happen to be available immediately.

Create a Home That Feels Like Your Favorite Escape

Your Napa vacation home should do more than provide a place to stay. It should create the experience you’ve been looking forward to from the moment you planned the trip.

Whether that means embracing a completely different aesthetic, finding new ways to blend your family’s style, or creating spaces that encourage long dinners, slow mornings, and meaningful connection, thoughtful interior design makes that possible.

Frequently Asked Questions About Designing a Napa Vacation Home

How is designing a Napa vacation home different from designing a primary residence?

While the design process is similar, the priorities are often different. A primary residence is centered around everyday routines, while a vacation home is designed around how you want to relax, entertain, and spend time together. That shift often allows for more creativity and a greater focus on creating memorable experiences.

Should every room in a vacation home be designed at the same time?

Not necessarily. Many homeowners choose to furnish their vacation home in phases. Prioritizing the spaces you use most—such as the great room, kitchen, or primary suite—can be a practical way to spread out the investment while still creating a beautiful, functional home.

What makes a vacation home feel luxurious without being overly formal?

Luxury is less about expensive furnishings and more about thoughtful design. Comfortable seating, performance fabrics, layered textures, beautiful lighting, and spaces that encourage connection all contribute to a home that feels elevated while remaining inviting and easy to live in.

Can my Napa vacation home still feel timeless if I want it to reflect Wine Country?

Absolutely. Timeless design comes from interpreting the character of Wine Country rather than decorating around it. Natural materials, warm colors, handcrafted details, and an emphasis on indoor-outdoor living create a home that feels connected to Napa without relying on obvious motifs or trends.

Is full-service interior design worth it for a vacation home?

For many homeowners, yes. Managing a furnishing project from another city or state can be time-consuming and overwhelming. A full-service interior designer oversees everything from space planning and sourcing to ordering, installation, and final styling, allowing you to arrive at a home that’s completely finished and ready to enjoy.
